Mexico: Unrest Returns to Oaxaca
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Police and protesters clashed in Oaxaca City July 16 when demonstrators tried to march to a stadium where the annual Guelaguetza cultural festival is set to begin July 23. Some protesters said they wanted to hold an alternative fair before the renowned festival began, while others said they wanted to block the event as they did last year when demonstrators took over the center of the city for five months of protest. Last year’s unrest was finally resolved in November but the current incident is an unsettling reminder that tensions are still high in the region and a repeat of earlier turmoil isn’t out of the question. The week-long Guelaguetza festival celebrates Indian music, crafts and cuisine and draws tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world.
