Peru: Nationwide Strikes Disrupt Travel
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Nationwide protests over a new proficiency test for teachers led to a general strike and demonstrations in just about every major town and city. In the southern region of Puno, demonstrators tried to take over an airport and railway station, the airport in Cusco was temporarily closed, and protesters shut down the rail line to Machu Picchu, stranding 1,200 tourists who had gone to the famous archaeological site. Travel throughout the country could continue to be disrupted.
