China: Beijing Looks for Ways to Stem Air Pollution
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Stung by criticism that Beijing’s air pollution could cause some of next year’s Olympics events to be rescheduled, Chinese officials ran a test to remove 1.3 million vehicles from the streets for four days to see if air quality would improve. According to officials it did, dropping from an index of 115 before the test to 93 and then back up to 116 the day after the test. A score below 100 indicates good conditions and from 101 to 200 slight pollution. The skies never cleared and humidity and wind conditions kept pollution from dispersing, but traffic flow increased significantly as the usual gridlock diminished. All agree something has to be done for the Olympics next year, but some officials are looking for long-term solutions.
