Ecuador: Crime in Quito Hotel Zones

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 2nd, 2007 | Trackback

The U.S. Embassy in Quito issued a statement reminding U.S. citizens that the hotel zone around Avenida 12 de Octubre and Calle Cordero remains a prime target area for thieves and muggers. Criminals come to this and other hotel areas because that is where the affluent foreigners are. An employee of the U.S. Embassy was recently robbed here when two assailants approached on a motorcycle and robbed him at gunpoint. Briefcases and laptop computer bags make perfect bait for armed thieves, so try to disguise your possessions and avoid walking alone, especially at night. Usually criminals here use weapons for intimidation, but resistance can cause muggings to escalate to violence. The embassy recommends cooperating with thieves to avoid injury or worse.
