Germany: Neo-Nazi Mob Attacks Indian Tourists
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A mob of some 50 neo-Nazi youths attacked a group of eight Indian tourists during a festival in the town of Mugeln near Leipzig in eastern Germany Aug. 19. Witnesses reported hearing xenophobic chants including “foreigners out” during the attack but town officials seemed perplexed that there could be any right-wing extremists in their community. Other observers said that neo-Nazis targeted the festival to spark violence. Youths in many communities in the former East Germany are frustrated by their lack of opportunities and many are turning to neo-Nazi groups. This incident spurred nationwide discussions about whether right-wing youths are increasingly spoiling for violence and what can be done about the problem.
