Greece: Drought Emergency in Cyclades, Troubles in Crete
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In the midst of a searing heat wave, Greece declared a drought emergency for the Cyclades chain of islands, which includes Mykonos and Santorini. The announcement means the islands will get more help from the government including additional water-tanker shipments and funding for desalination plants. In other news, two Polish tourists lagged behind their tour group in Crete’s Samaria Gorge and apparently left the main trail and got lost. After five days searchers found one dead and the other dying. Their deaths are a reminder to know the terrain before setting out, especially during an intense heat wave. Also in Crete, hundreds of residents of Malia, including hotel owners and even the mayor, blocked the area’s main highway to demand the government crack down on tourist agencies promoting wild vacations to young British tourists. The locals say the tourists come only to get drunk and behave lewdly, ruining the town and making the streets unsafe at night.
