Jordan: Taxi Assault in Amman
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The crime rate in Amman is low and violent crimes against Americans are rare, but occasionally things do happen. Recently an American woman caught a cab in a commercial district of west Amman in the middle of the day, but the driver drove her to an isolated area and assaulted her. The U.S. Embassy in Amman reports that marked yellow cabs are generally considered to be safe, and some radio taxi companies vet their drivers. Other advice to protect yourself is always to carry a cell phone, make note of the taxi license plate number and enter it into your phone before getting in, sit behind the driver, and be careful about casual conversations that because of cultural differences could be interpreted as flirting.
