Mexico and Central America: Hurricane Felix and Henriette Hit on Same Day

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 5th, 2007 | Trackback

Atlantic and Pacific hurricanes made landfall on the same day for the first time since such data has been recorded. Current statistics date to 1949 and also show that this hurricane season has seen another first, two category 5 hurricanes (the strongest) occurring in the same season, with this week’s Hurricane Felix coming two weeks after Hurricane Dean. Felix tore through Puerto Cabezas Sept 4 and caused significant flooding before heading for Honduras and Guatemala, where officials worried about mudslides from heavy rains. Ten thousand people were evacuated from areas of Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital. In Mexico, Hurricane Henriette hit Cabo San Lucas with 85 mph winds and churned up beaches with huge seas before heading into Mexico’s northern deserts.
