Netherlands: Amsterdam’s Red Light District to Lose 51 Display Windows
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Over the next few months Amsterdam officials will close a third of the city’s brothels because of concerns over rising petty crime in the red-light district that has been a tourist magnet for decades. Prostitution is legal and licensed in Amsterdam and the city is renowned for its rows of windows where sex workers preen to attract customers, often to the entertainment of tourists. The city has struck a deal to buy 18 buildings from a man known as Amsterdam’s “Emperor of Sex” and close the 51 windows where prostitutes work, but other buildings will remain with ongoing window displays.
