Hawaii: National Park Service Suspends Bicycle Tours on Haleakala

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 11th, 2007 | Trackback

The National Park Service suspended commercial bicycle tours in Haleakala National Park following the third death on the long downhill run in a year. The bike trips are one of the most popular activities on Maui. Tour operators drive participants to Haleakala’s 10,000-foot summit and tourists then descend 38 miles on bicycles along a winding two-lane road. In the three fatal accidents, one cyclist lost control of her bike, crossed the center line and collided with a van, another woman ran off the road, and in the third, a man fell off his bicycle. The National Park Service suspended the tours for 60 days beginning Oct. 10 to give officials time to determine if bicycle tours can safely operate in the park. There is no ban on individuals riding in the park, only on commercial tours.
