Kenya: Kidnap Threat on Kiwayu Island; Possible Election Violence

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 3rd, 2007 | Trackback

The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi warned that Islamic extremists from Somalia may be planning to kidnap Westerners, especially U.S. citizens, on beaches in the Kiwayu Island tourist area and other beach sites on the northeast coast near Somalia. Kiwayu is in the Lamu archipelago, an area popular with Western travelers. The Embassy urged Americans to use “extreme caution” here. In other news, 25 foreign embassies called on Kenyan authorities to ensure a clean, fair, and peaceful vote in December’s presidential election and to take a position of zero tolerance on election violence. The 2002 presidential election and a referendum in 2005 produced riots and fighting, and already one rally has turned violent as the campaign just gets underway.
