Sri Lanka: Travel to North and East Still Dangerous, Yala Wildlife Sanctuary Closed

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 25th, 2007 | Trackback

Travel to northern and eastern Sri Lanka remains risky because of ongoing conflict between the armed forces and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels. The government has controlled the eastern part of the country since July 2007, but some insurgents and paramilitary members remain active in the area and security cannot be guaranteed. The LTTE attacked an army camp in Yala National Wildlife Sanctuary Oct. 15, killing six soldiers. This attack took place in a tourist area but no tourists were targeted or injured. The LTTE uses landmines, making travel in areas where the rebels are active dangerous. Yala National Wildlife Sanctuary is now closed, but officials hope to reopen it in two weeks, and the government intends to introduce new security measures for the park.
