Democratic Republic of Congo: New Nature Reserve Created to Protect Great Apes
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In conjunction with U.S. agencies and conservation groups, Congo has established a new rain forest reserve of almost 12,000 square miles for the bonobo, an ape sometimes called a pygmy chimpanzee that is more closely related to humans than to gorillas. The apes live only in the heart of the Congo Basin, Africa’s largest rain forest, where the Sankuru Nature Reserve is larger than the state of Massachusetts but just over 1 percent of Congo. Villagers who live on the borders of the reserve will help with management and have agreed to stop hunting the animals, whose biggest threat is organized hunting for the commercial bush meat trade.
