Dubai: Labor Strike and Dubai Air Show

Some 40,000 Asian construction workers striking over low pay, high living costs and poor working conditions have created a labor crisis in this construction-mad city-state that has fueled its boom as a business and luxury tourism center through low-paid imported workers. The strikers have refused to work at a hotel site that is part of the world’s-tallest-building project and their action prompted the government to intervene, encouraging ministers to establish minimum guidelines for wages and workers’ rights, including eliminating bogus deductions as a way to withhold payment. Strikes are illegal and unions are banned in the United Arab Emirates, so these developments are unprecedented. In other news, thousands of visitors will be attending the Dubai Air Show Nov. 11-15, and the U.S. State Department issued a public announcement alerting Americans to its concerns about a possible terrorist attack there. The U.S. government has no specific or credible information suggesting there is a threat, but based its announcement on ongoing threats in the region in general.
