France: Riots in Suburban Paris, Champs-Elysees Crime Up
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The rail strike that paralyzed Paris transport is over but on its heels came rioting in the city’s poor suburbs sparked by the deaths of two teenagers in a collision with a police car. Three nights of violence were reminiscent of the unrest of 2005 when riots continued for three weeks, but the current incidents were not on the same scale. Officials called for calm and were working to defuse the situation. In other news, crime around the Champs-Elysees, perhaps the world’s most famous avenue, has increased dramatically in recent years. A report released Nov. 26 by France’s National Crime Observatory showed incidents in the eighth arrondissement, the district that includes the Champs-Elysees, increased in many categories in 2006: personal assaults were up 32 percent; cases of violence without theft were up 93 percent; reports of threatening behavior were up almost 49 percent.
