India: Monkeys in Delhi Get Riled Up
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Delhi is facing a monkey crisis as the city grows into the surrounding countryside forcing forest monkeys into urban areas. Recent incidents have locals worried that things are getting out of hand: Delhiās deputy mayor died when he fell after a fight with monkeys, and a lone monkey on a rampage bit and scratched 25 people after trying to grab several infants. Authorities have caught some 1,900 monkeys and relocated them in sanctuaries, but thousands remain in the city. Some officials have taken the novel approach of putting monkeys to work to control their brethren: a larger langur monkey is used by the Delhi Metro train service and another by the federal government offices to scare away the smaller primates.
