Indonesia: Security Tightened in Bali, Sharia Law a Tourist Attraction in Sumatra, Floods in Jakarta
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The UN Climate Change Conference will be held at Nusa Dua, Bali Dec. 3-14. Security in the area will be tight and hotel rooms nearby will be in short supply. Demonstrations are possible. An ongoing terrorist threat against Western interests exists in Indonesia, and places frequented by foreigners have been targeted in the past. In other news, tourism officials in Aceh province on Sumatra hope to make the province’s use of Sharia law a tourist attraction, inviting foreigners to come see how Islamic law serves the community and reflects its culture. In Jakarta, floods caused by high tides, failure to fix a sea barrier damaged a year ago, and, according to Indonesia’s environment minister, global warming, closed a highway to the international airport, reached a depth of six feet in some places and forced thousands to flee their homes. Authorities used pumps to lower the water level.
