Australia: Fires on Kangaroo Island; Daintree Rainforest May Be Restricted
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Fires on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island burned for more than a week scorching 115 square miles of scrub and wilderness, with one fire in the Flinders Chase National Park still burning out of control Dec. 12. Tourism operators urged visitors not to cancel their trips to the popular island following moves to reopen tourist areas and national parks unaffected by the fires. In other news, part of the Daintree rainforest in far north Queensland could become off limits to non-Aboriginal people in a native land claim that was formalized by Australia’s Federal Court Dec. 8. Access to popular attractions such as Roaring Meg Falls and the Creb Track could be cut off as the Kuku Yalanji people take control of almost 900 square miles of land their ancestors inhabited for centuries. Outsiders will still have access to some beaches, the national parks and other areas.
