Kenya: Election Violence and Crime in Mombasa

More than 14 million of Kenya’s 35 million citizens are registered to vote in the Dec. 27 election for a new president, parliament and local councils. As in past elections, this campaign has been plagued by violence. Since July, 35 people have been killed in election-related incidents, 13 in the last couple of weeks, and thousands have fled rural areas where youths have been fighting. Police have vowed to crack down on such violence, but further incidents are likely until the election is complete. In other news, an Italian tour group that had just arrived in Mombasa and was on its way to Malindi was robbed by bandits wielding AK-47 rifles. The robbers fired on the group’s van to stop it and then took all of the tourist’s possessions.

Crime in all parts of Kenya is fueled by complexes - superiority and inferiority. The leaders are not helping either. Our tribe/clan is being targeted…we have been neglected in the past forty years…thats seems to be what everyone is saying. Deeds must plaster what words can’t do. Our ignorant populace is all ears and no limbs for anything but violence.
