Sri Lanka: Sliding Back into War?
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |This tropical island nation appears to be spiraling down into civil war again as a cease-fire brokered by Norwegian negotiators in 2002 has deteriorated to the point of collapse and conflict is escalating. Tamil Tiger rebels have been confined to their stronghold in the north but struck Colombo, the capital city, with two suicide bombings in late November, killing 19 and injuring 45, mostly civilians. The military has launched air strikes and commando raids in rebel areas and the Tamil Tigers’ leader stated that there was no hope to make peace. A general security alert exists in Colombo and military checkpoints were established on roads leading into the city.
