St. Maarten: Water Shortage Should Be Resolved by Peak Tourist Season

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 13th, 2007 | Trackback

This Dutch territory that shares its Caribbean island with the French territory of St. Martin has been experiencing water shortages that have left some residents without water for at least five days. People are collecting rain water for bathing and cooking while authorities say they will begin buying water from French St. Martin to slake the Dutch side’s thirst. The shortage has been blamed on a building boom that has dramatically increased the demand for water. A new water treatment plant is expected to begin operating by the end of December and add about 30 percent more water to the supply, maybe in the nick of time for peak tourist season.
