Egypt, Gaza, Israel: Border Crisis Stirs Tensions Between Egypt, Hamas, Palestinian Authority

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 30th, 2008 | Trackback

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians poured into Egypt after Hamas militants blew open the border partition between Gaza and the Egyptian city of Rafah Jan. 23, relieving tensions in Gaza but creating tensions in Egypt. For the past six months Gaza has been blockaded by Israel because of almost daily rocket attacks on Israeli border regions, creating a shortage of supplies in Gaza. Palestinians bought up almost everything that was available in the border towns and now supplies are running short there as well. A resolution to the border crisis is complicated because Egypt wants to share responsibility for the border crossing with the Palestinian Authority, but Hamas is demanding a role. Meanwhile, Israel has closed off many hiking trails and tourist spots along the border until the crisis is resolved. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is restricting non-official travel by U.S. personnel to Rafah and Al Areesh, and urges Americans to avoid these areas.
