Italy: New “Residents Only” Water Bus in Venice, Michelangelo’s “David” May Move in Florence
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |It isn’t news that annually Italy is flooded with tourists, but the recent reactions of Florence and Venice are noteworthy. Officials in Florence are studying ways to relieve congestion in the heart of the city and one option being considered is to move Michelangelo’s “David” out of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where it has stood since 1873, to a new theater planned near Leopolda Station at the edge of the city. “David” contributes to the congestion because 1.3 million people line up to view him each year. In Venice, a residents-only vaporetto (water bus) service opened Jan. 21. The line is reserved for holders of the Carta Venezia pass and is aimed at providing special service for the beleaguered locals to avoid the crush of tourists on their transit lines. Non-residents can buy the pass, but it makes sense only for repeat visitors because it costs 40 euros ($58) and is valid for three years.
