South Africa: Power Failures Affect Table Mountain Cable Car; Armed Attacks Near Kruger Park
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Load-shedding by the national electricity company caused the cable car running up Cape Town’s Table Mountain to stall just short of its docking station, stranding some 900 tourists on the peak for three hours. The cable system’s backup power supply failed but everyone was safely evacuated in an hour with no injuries, only inconveniences. The utility has been staging rolling blackouts to meet excessive demand, disrupting businesses and services and is considering rationing for all users until it can get new and decommissioned power stations running. In other news, a tourist was shot in the arm and leg during an attempted robbery in one of three attacks near Kruger National Park. Gunmen using rifles apparently stolen from a wildlife lodge earlier this month fired on cars in Manyeleti Reserve and at the Orpen Gate at Timbavati Game Reserve Lodge. Police were looking for suspects and tourism officials called for more police security in the area.
