Thailand: Muslim Insurgency Plagues Southern Provinces

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 17th, 2008 | Trackback

Four years after it began, a Muslim insurgency continues to plague Thailand’s southern provinces where little progress has been made to curb the violence. Suspected Islamists ambushed a military vehicle and killed eight soldiers Jan. 14, then the next day detonated a bomb hidden on a motorcycle in a busy marketplace in Yala, wounding at least 39 people. Many of their attacks over the years have targeted civilians in an apparent strategy to terrorize the communities and cause Buddhists to flee the region. The violence hasn’t affected the resort areas on the Andaman Coast or the Gulf of Thailand, but creates risks for overland travel in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla provinces, including the town of Hat Yai.
