Dubai: Englishman Sentenced to Four Years in Jail for Speck of Cannabis

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 14th, 2008 | Trackback

The United Arab Emirates’ zero tolerance on drugs is a serious matter not to be trifled with if the case of an imprisoned Englishman is any indication. Press reports say that he was arrested in September and sentenced recently to four years in prison for possession of a tiny speck of cannabis found on the sole of his shoe. The trace, weighing less than a grain of sugar, was found inside the stub of a cigarette he had apparently stepped on while traveling from Ethiopia to London. Whether he is forced to serve his entire sentence remains to be seen.
