Northern Ireland: Security Tightened after Dissident Republican Threat

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 14th, 2008 | Trackback

The Police Service of Northern Ireland warned Feb. 6 of an increased threat from dissident republicans throughout the province. Violence has diminished substantially in Northern Ireland in recent years as a power sharing government has taken root and put an end to “the Troubles,” but the potential for incidents still exists. Officials warned business owners to check their premises daily for incendiary devices and to review their security measures. Increased security operations are likely, including vehicle checkpoints. Cooperate with police if stopped and be alert for suspicious activity. In other news, the cost of driving a gas-guzzler into the center of London will increase three-fold later this year when the charge increases to 25 pounds ($49) for SUVs and sports cars. Fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrids will be allowed in free. Best advice for a tourist? Walk or take the Underground.
