Paraguay: Yellow Fever and Dengue Fever Threats
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Some 4,000 people demanding vaccinations against yellow fever blocked a highway near the capital Asuncion a week after confirmation of the first incidence of the disease in 34 years. Health authorities announced that the five cases originated in a remote farm community and none of the victims had died. The blockade snarled traffic for hours but no violence occurred. The government placed an urgent request with international health authorities for 600,000 doses of vaccine. Paraguay is also on alert for dengue fever, with authorities urging people to eliminate standing water to deprive mosquitoes of their breeding places. Last year 27,000 cases were reported and 17 people died.
