Armenia: State of Emergency in Yerevan
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Authorities declared a 20-day state of emergency in Yerevan March 1 following a violent clash between protesters and police in which eight people died and more than 130 were injured. Major rallies over a disputed presidential election have occurred almost daily since Feb. 19, but now the city is under martial law with numerous checkpoints on main roads into the city and a heavy police presence in the downtown areas. Tensions are likely to remain high for some time.

This is really so strange to read. I was in Yerevan from 29 January till 13 February and it was the greatest place I’ve ever been to. I live in South Africa, and for me violence is a daily occurrence. Politically we are stable here, but our crime is out off control.
With my visit to Yerevan the first thing I realized was that it is such a peaceful and relaxed city. I can’t even imagine that such a thing can be happening in such a awesome city. It’s really sad.
I hope that the problems the Armenian people are experiencing right now can be solved really soon. Yerevan is too great and beautiful and the people to generous to be caught up in such horrifying circumstances.
I will pray that it will be over soon. After all the struggles off the past that the Armenian people survived it’s really sad to hear and read that there is now fighting amongst each other.
No matter what the cause and the issue that started it, remember that you are a great nation and there are people like me that admire your strength.
All my best wishes and prayers to the citizens of Armenia.
