Italy: Naples Garbage Cleanup Making Progress
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The piles of uncollected garbage that plagued Naples the past several months are gone from the center of the city thanks to the efforts of “trash tsar” Gianni De Gennaro, but the damage has been done to the area’s tourism industry. Business at hotels and restaurants has dried up and the city is largely empty of tourists. Locals remain cynical about the clean-up, many believing it is little more than a cosmetic exercise before the general election April 13-14. Garbage heaps remain in the outer areas of the city and because the landfills are full, the trash that was hauled away was simply shipped elsewhere. A permanent solution will only be possible when new landfills are found or incinerators are built.
