Thailand: Safety Whistles for Women in Phuket; Trouble in Southern Provinces

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | March 20th, 2008 | Trackback

Officials in Phuket have vowed to provide whistles to women visiting the popular tourist island after the murder in broad daylight of a 27-year-old Swedish woman walking alone on Mai Khao beach. A suspect surrendered to police and is in custody. The whistles are part of a plan to improve safety for tourists and raise awareness of potential dangers. The tourism ministry also intends to increase the presence of security guards around the island and distribute safety manuals to visitors. In other news, the U.S. State Department warned against travel to the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla because of ongoing attacks by Muslim insurgents and because of a bombing at the C.S. Pattani Hotel March 15 that killed two and injured 14. The hotel has long been a base for foreign journalists, tourists and government officials. The car bombing suggests that insurgent attacks may now begin targeting public places.
