Cambodia: Flotilla of Beggars Troubles Officials in Chong Kneas

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | April 23rd, 2008 | Trackback

A visit to the floating village of Chong Kneas is a popular side trip from Siem Reap, the jumping off point for Angkor Wat, but its popularity has created perhaps predictable consequences. Local fishermen have found begging to be more lucrative than fishing and they now swarm around the tourist boats in vessels with outboard motors, in rowboats, even in bathtubs and plastic buckets. Authorities would like to stop the flotilla of beggars but say they do not have the facilities to detain them all. The issue has reached the ears of the national tourism minister and he vowed to discuss it at a regional tourism meeting.

I am afraid this is becoming a common problem in many areas , just like the moto men swarming buses for customers to a point you have to fight to even get off the bus .These types of things plus the general piles of garbage are turning tourists off , the powers that be should tend to these problems before venturing into the airline buisiness , you have to lure people before you can fly them and give them reasons to return other than ancient history .
