Zimbabwe: Election Dispute Has Country on Edge

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 10th, 2008 | Trackback

Zimbabwe has teetered on the brink of political disintegration for months and is now in an acute crisis following national elections in which the opposition appears to have won both the presidency and control of parliament. Long-ruling President Robert Mugabe has refused to release the election results and appears to be calculating how to hold onto power through intimidation. Depending on what path he takes and how the court rules on releasing the election results, the country could descend into violence. Under Mugabe’s rule Zimbabwe has acquired the world’s highest rate of inflation at more than 100,000 percent, an unemployment rate of more than 80 percent, and chronic shortages of food and fuel.
