Australia: Sydney Train System Crime Cleanup
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In a campaign to clean up crime on and around Sydney’s train system, authorities launched a crackdown involving 1600 rail and police officers who over three months seized 63 weapons and arrested 566 people for assault, theft and robbery. The campaign was prompted by figures that showed crime increasing 12 percent in 2007 to an average of 25 assaults a week. Police learned through this and earlier crackdowns that it was more effective to put officers in high crime spots than to have security personnel on every train. The five places with the highest crime rates were Sydney’s City Circle stops, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Parramatta and Penrith stations.
