Czech Republic: New Tourist Police in Prague

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 4th, 2008 | Trackback

A new tourist police squad is in place for the summer in Prague’s main tourist areas. In the stretch between Wenceslas Square and Prague Castle via Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge, at least seven special police are on patrol from 10 a.m. to midnight. Their mission is to combat street crime, especially pickpockets and currency scammers who exchange with unknowing tourists Bulgarian levas instead of Czech crowns for foreign currency. Officers speak German and English and are assisted by university students who speak at least two foreign languages. Mobile police stations are also in place throughout the city, with those in Wenceslas Square remaining open until 1 a.m.
