Dominican Republic: Criminals’ Tactics in Santo Domingo

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 11th, 2008 | Trackback

According to the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo, one of the best ways to avoid serious losses to thieves is to carry 100 pesos (about $3) in your right front pocket to hand over if confronted. Most thieves want to make a quick escape and 100 pesos is sometimes enough to satisfy them. The Embassy reported common criminal tactics used on sidewalks and in public parks, including the popular park, Mirador del Sur. One is bag snatching by a man on a passing motorcycle; another involves two men on a motorcycle, one who gets off to rob his victim and then escape on the motorcycle; still another involves a second motorcyclist who acts as a lookout. In all cases, a good precaution is to walk toward oncoming traffic to make it harder for motorcycles to approach from behind, and to avoid wearing purses or bags over your neck to prevent neck injuries if the bag is snatched.
