Fiji: Foreign Affairs Stamp Requirement Complicates Tourist Weddings

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 19th, 2008 | Trackback

Tourist weddings in Fiji have dropped by two-thirds since 2004 because of a government requirement for a special stamp on marriage certificates. For a marriage to be recognized in other countries, it must have a stamp from the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs. He is the only person authorized to use the special seal, and if he happens to be out of the country when foreigners are married, they would be obliged to wait until he returns or leave Fiji without the stamp that would validate the marriage. Along with all of the other details involved in planning a wedding, checking the secretary’s calendar is one that would not immediately come to mind.
