Zambia/Zimbabwe: Zambia Fears Mass Exodus from Zimbabwe Because of Election Violence

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 19th, 2008 | Trackback

Authorities in Zambia are fearful of a mass exodus of immigrants from Zimbabwe in the aftermath of Zimbabwe’s run-off presidential election June 27. President Robert Mugabe appears determined not to let a possible election defeat remove him from power and has threatened to “go to war” to prevent opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai and his party from taking control. The run-up to the election has been marred by a campaign of murder and intimidation by Mugabe supporters to the point where Human Rights Watch and others have urged the election to be called off because a fair vote will be impossible. If the election is held as planned, Zambia expects an influx of asylum seekers no matter which side wins because it expects violence in either case.
