Chile: Llaima Volcano Eruption Closes Conguillio National Park

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 10th, 2008 | Trackback

Llaima volcano, about 400 miles south of Santiago near Chile’s popular lakes region and surrounded by Conguillio National Park, erupted July 1, causing authorities to order evacuation of some 40 residents and to recommend against travel to the area because of the danger from lava flows and mudslides created by melting snow. The volcano is one of South America’s most active, and this eruption follows its New Year’s Day blast that forced evacuation of tourists and residents from the national park. This eruption also came just two months after the spectacular eruption of Chaiten volcano in Patagonia farther south.
