Dominican Republic: Credit Card Fraud Up

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | July 2nd, 2008 | Trackback

The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo reported a surge of thefts of credit and debit card numbers from Embassy staff and the expatriate community, but no single location of card usage has been tied to the thefts. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating, and until more information is found about how the thefts are occurring, the Embassy suggests that travelers’ avoid using credit or debit cards. If using a credit card, consider one with a low credit line. Travelers who have used either type of card in the Dominican Republic during the last two months should check their bills for fraudulent charges or withdrawals.

I was recently in Punta Cana in the Dominican Repulbic and was a victim of credit card theft. I purchased an item in the resort’s jewelry store. At the time of my purchase the clerk was having difficulty getting the card to go through and was plugging and unplugging wires. It finally worked. When I got home and my new statement came, there were numerous charges on my card made in Florida. My purchase was made at Hofmann Jewelers within the Bavarro Princess resort. It was the only credit card purchase within the resort and due to the events at the jewelry store while making my purchase, I am CERTAIN that that is where it happened.
