India: Bombings in Two Cities Raise Tensions

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 30th, 2008 | Trackback

A spate of bombings in two major cities and the defusing of 18 other bombs in another city has created tension across the country. The tech hub of Bangalore in the south was hit by seven small bombs that killed two people July 25. The next day 22 explosions erupted in Ahmadabad killing 45, and on July 29, 18 bombs were defused in Surat, 175 miles south of Ahmadabad. The settings for such attacks in India are often places where people congregate such as markets, temples and commuter trains. It is unclear who staged these attacks and why, but authorities suspect a foreign hand assisting homegrown Islamic terrorists.
