Mexico: Cabo Transit Dispute Riles Tourists; Longer Waits at San Diego-Tijuana Border Crossing

A long-simmering dispute between taxi drivers and tour operators in Los Cabos caught tourists in the middle July 16 when the taxis blocked buses from leaving hotels and forced the passengers to take taxis to the airport. Most of the tourists had paid for the bus transfers as part of their tour packages, and some had to haul their luggage a quarter mile to catch their cabs. The dispute revolves around the taxi drivers’ assertion that they have the exclusive right to carry passengers in the area and the tour buses are illegal. Whether the drivers are right or wrong, the tourists were irate. The federal tourism minister recently tried to settle the dispute but failed. In other news, Americans returning to the U.S. at the Tijuana border crossing are facing longer waits since the January decision by immigration officials to phase out the practice of granting border guards the discretion to allow returnees to pass simply by stating their U.S. citizenship. Now Americans must prove it with a passport, birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. Expect delays of 90 minutes or more.
