France: Health Inspectors Find Spoiled Food in Restaurants across France

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 21st, 2008 | Trackback

One month into a two-month evaluation of food safety across the country, inspectors from the French agriculture ministry found that 27 percent of the establishments checked failed quality and hygiene tests. The inspections targeted everything from food stalls to three-star Michelin restaurants and found the main culprits to be chip, kebab and pizza vendors and roadside restaurants. Poor refrigeration was the main problem, especially affecting mayonnaise in sandwiches and ready-made salads. Another issue was substandard products imported from outside the EU. France prides itself on its food, so the revelation is nothing short of scandalous. Whatever the source, the best advice is to eat fresh food whenever possible to avoid stomachaches or worse.
