Guatemala: U.S. Embassy Urges Using Security Escort for Petén Travel

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 7th, 2008 | Trackback

In late June a van carrying U.S. university students and faculty was robbed by two gunmen while traveling in the Peten region near the Belize border. The incident occurred where the road became unpaved and the van had to slow down, allowing the robbers to fire on the vehicle. The Peten is a remote region with few roads where drug cartels operate out of hidden airstrips. Security within the Peten’s many national parks and nature reserves is adequate, but armed attacks continue on the roads between the region and Guatemala City. The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City urges all overland travelers to request a security escort from the Guatemala Tourist Assistance Office. There has yet to be an armed robbery of a group using this escort service.
