Indonesia: President Says Terrorists Still a Threat
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In an address before Parliament, Indonesia’s president warned that the country still faces terrorist threats despite the absence of a major attack in almost three years. Authorities cracked down on Islamic militants following a bombing on the island of Bali in 2005 and have been successful in stopping potential attacks, most recently in July when they arrested 10 suspects on the island of Sumatra with a cache of explosives and plans to bomb a café. Police have made significant progress in dismantling the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah that is blamed for a serious of major bombings in Indonesia, including the 2005 and 2002 bombings on Bali. Three death row inmates convicted in the 2002 Bali incident are expected to be executed by the end of August but their lawyers are seeking delays.
