Italy: 3,000 Troops Now Patrolling Italy’s Major Cities

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 7th, 2008 | Trackback

Some 3,000 troops have been deployed to Italy’s major cities to combat street crime. The soldiers were sent to Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna, Turin and Palermo Aug. 4 to help police patrol the cities’ most frequented public places. In Rome they were stationed at subway and railway stations and an immigrant center but were to be held back from Rome’s historic core. In Milan they were patrolling the Duomo cathedral and other areas. Other cities to receive army patrols are Bari, Florence, Genoa, Venice and Verona. Supporters of the plan believe the troops can help free police to focus on suspicious persons while opponents feel the move is an unnecessary militarization of Italy’s cities. The plan will be in effect for six months and under the law can be renewed for six more months.
