Kenya: Peace Corps Back in Kenya

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 27th, 2008 | Trackback

The temporary suspension of the U.S. Peace Corps program in Kenya has been lifted and volunteers are now back in the country. The program was suspended during unrest surrounding the disputed presidential election in December that was finally resolved by a power-sharing agreement signed on Feb. 28. Both parties are adhering to the terms of the agreement and the situation has calmed. Kenya still has a high rate of violent crime and visitors should be vigilant at all times. The U.S. State Department warned that it continues to receive indications of terrorist threats against American, Kenyan and Western interests, and urged travelers to be especially aware of their surroundings in public places frequented by foreigners.
