Costa Rica: Mugging Is a Lesson That It Could Happen to Anyone

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 11th, 2008 | Trackback

The mugging of a 45-year-old fit former boxer 50 yards from his hotel and two blocks from a police station in Playa del Coco is a reminder that even the most unlikely targets for crime can become victims if they let down their guard. The American tourist took a stroll on the beach alone after midnight, assuming that he was secure through confidence in his abilities and because several people were hanging out on the beach. They turned out to be the ones who mugged him, pinning him to the ground and stomping him while they relieved him of his possessions. Even a seasoned traveler and martial artist can be mugged if he takes unnecessary chances and does not pay close enough attention to his surroundings.
