Italy: Government Considers More Troops to Assist Police

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 3rd, 2008 | Trackback

With 3,000 troops already patrolling Italy’s cities along with police, the Italian government is considering adding more after two brutal attacks on tourists near Rome and Naples and an equally vicious attack on monks in a monastery near Turin. In the first incident, police arrested two Romanian shepherds for an attack on a Dutch couple who had pitched a tent outside Rome. In the second, the teenage son of a local mob boss was arrested as one of three suspects in the armed robbery and sexual abuse of a German couple on a beach near Naples. In the third, hooded attackers invaded the San Colombano Belmonte monastery and bound and beat four Franciscan monks before stealing a small amount of money. If more troops are deployed, the patrols would be expanded to outlying areas of the cities.
