Mauritius: Crime Against Tourists on the Rise

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 3rd, 2008 | Trackback

Crime against tourists in this island nation is low, but on the rise, and authorities launched an awareness campaign to alert tourists to the security measures they should take to avoid becoming a victim. These measures are mostly common sense: avoid walking alone at night, avoid secluded areas after dark, avoid beachside bungalows operated by unregistered proprietors, always secure money and valuables. Most crime is petty theft but there have been two recent incidents, a rape and a robbery, that have raised concerns. Some 500 attacks on tourists have occurred in the past year.
